Services should, at their core, be fully mindful of the wishes and aspirations of the service user and as a default position, should be making sure the service user and carers has a voice and being heard is a basic human right. What happens is this voice is often denied or ignored. As an advocate, I want to work with my advocacy partner to support them and find that voice which is inside them.

I have been working with Asist over a number of years and remain impressed with their commitment to staff education and the support they give to social workers in training. Too many times social work and advocacy are seen as opposites and therefore in opposition. Asist’s provision of student placements ensures when qualified those professionals understand the value of advocacy and work alongside advocates as two sides of the same coin.
